Rayshard Brooks was fatally shot by Atlanta police Friday night in a Wendy’s parking lot after a struggle with authorities during a sobriety check.

The shooting led to the resignation of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields and sparked a demonstration where hundreds of protesters marched through the city, setting fire to the restaurant where Brooks, 27, was killed and blocking traffic on part of the highway.

Officer fired after fatal shooting
Update 8:54 a.m. EDT June 14: The Atlanta police officer who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks Friday night in a Wendy’s parking lot has been fired.

The Atlanta police department announced early Sunday that Officer Garrett Rolfe, a veteran with the department who was hired in October 2013, was fired and Devin Brosnan, who was hired in September 2018, was placed on administrative duty.

The deadly confrontation reportedly began because of a complaint about Brooks sleeping in a car blocking the Wendy’s drive-thru. Brooks reportedly failed a field sobriety test, then resisted arrest. During a struggle with officers, Brooks grabbed a Taser and ran. He appears to point it while fleeing, and then was shot three times.

Police Chief Erika Shields resigned Saturday afternoon.

“I offered to step aside as police chief. APD has my full support, and Mayor Bottoms has my support on the future direction of this department,” Shields said in a statement. "I have faith in the Mayor, and it is time for the city to move forward and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.”
