The first pre-season test has officially concluded, with Mercedes drawing first blood. Strangely enough, Scuderia Ferrari appeared to be holding back and focusing elsewhere. Although Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc are confident that the team will buck up when the season begins.

This was a complete role reversal of what happened last year, when the Italian team dominated testing. Sadly for them, all smiles were instantly wiped out when their early pace was absent when the season began. This time around, they hope that by ‘sandbagging’, they will emerge as excellent contenders for wins and the championship.

Unfortunately, team principal Mattia Binotto is not too thrilled about Ferrari’s progress. Evidently, some others agreed with him, namely Ferrari insider Leo Turrini. He wrote in his blog, “The first aerodynamic package of the SF1000 does not work. So far the problems of 2019 have not been solved. The car suffers from understeer and the performance on the dry lap are still far away from the Mercedes (and Red Bull) levels.”

Can Ferrari turn things around?

Obviously, this presents a very worrying picture for the Ferrari team. Although they have insisted that they have not focused on outright pace, people can only buy that excuse for so long. When the teams gather back in Barcelona for the second test, there is a chance that the team may and treat the fans to the Ferrari’s true speed.

According to Turrini, Ferrari will bring in some changes to the SF1000 in order to correct their issues. The team desperately need to show the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull that it will not be a 2-horse race. Both Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel will be highly motivated to bring success to Maranello.

Leclerc will be aiming to rack up more wins and challenge for the title. Vettel on the other hand, will be aiming for redemption, especially after committing several mistakes last year.
