Remains found during search for missing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen
Investigators on Tuesday said they discovered partial human remains while searching for missing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen near a river in Bell County, Texas.

The announcement came a few hours after the Killeen Police Department on Tuesday confirmed that unidentified remains were also discovered near a field over the weekend, where another Fort Hood soldier was found dead earlier this month. Officials said they were unsure if those remains were human but said they were being tested.

It is unclear whether the discoveries are connected, and officials had not confirmed the identity of the remains as of Tuesday evening.

Early Wednesday, a man who was the subject of a Fort Hood criminal investigation fatally shot himself while police officers approached him, authorities said.

Police did not say which criminal case involved the man they confronted.

Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command on Tuesday said they returned to an area of interest close to the Leon River while investigating the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen.

“After receiving additional information, agents have discovered what has been described as partial human remains after analysis from a forensic anthropologist,” officials said in a statement Tuesday evening.

Guillen, 20, was last seen in the middle of a workday on April 22 in the parking lot of the Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters at Fort Hood.

The soldier’s identification card, wallet and the keys to her car and base apartment were later found in the armory room where she had been earlier in the day, Army officials have said.

Killeen police on Tuesday said remains were also found during the weekend. Participants in a vigil for Pvt. Gregory Morales — who went missing last year and was found dead in a field outside Fort Hood on June 19 — found the remains Saturday, in the same area where Morales’ body was spotted in the 3200 block of Florence Road, police said.
Fort Hood officials said the remains found Saturday are not believed to be related to Guillen’s case.

Morales and Guillen, who were each stationed at Fort Hood before they disappeared, are both suspected to be the victims of foul play, according to authorities. Morales was last seen alive in August 2019, and Guillen was last heard from two months ago.

Investigators do not currently believe the two cases are connected, they have said.

Guillen’s family, who are from Houston, have blamed the soldier’s supervisors for her disappearance, saying she was being sexually harassed by at least one of them.

Morales, 24, an Oklahoma native who joined the Army in June 2015 as a motor transport operator, had been assigned to the 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division since November 2016, Army officials said.

He was last heard from on Aug. 20, 2019. He used the last name Wedel before his marriage and was scheduled to be discharged from the U.S. Army within a couple of days of his disappearance, Fort Hood officials said.
